A primary function of the unconscious mind is to protect you. This is why we all have rational fears, for example the fear of fire. Some times this can go wrong, and often following unpleasant feelings, and thoughts that are released during this unpleasant event are stored in the unconscious mind and when confronted by the same or a similar situation the unconscious mind releases the same feelings and thoughts again as part of our fight or flight response.
